more life drawing

I definitely need a lot of work on my life drawing. It can be really hard to juggle design, form, and proportions. If I'm focusing on one, the others always come up short. Here, the design isn't too strong, because I was just trying to figure out what all the bumps were. Most of my studies have been in cartooning, but I really want to learn figure drawing. They are so different.

  1. That shadow of the left forearm is sure important...nice drawing.

  2. Thanks DSM: as a general rule, I tend to use line and overlap for the contour, and then work with shadow shapes for everything inside the contour.

  3. Really nice balance between sculpting the form and 2d shapes and shadows. Keep up the great work! This is one of the best blogs going.

  4. Just wondering, were the muscle groups as clearly defined on the model? Or is this more a case of you using what you know and and kind of adding to what you see?

  5. Dylan: The model was very muscular. I didn't add anything I couldn't see. Drawing the anatomy can actually hurt your sense of realism in a life drawing. What I do is get the shape and overlaps right at the contour and use shadow everywhere inside of the contour to show big groups of fat and muscle. I try to think more in large forms that might group several parts of the anatomy and fat. I'll have to do a tutorial on it. It's a cool trick I learned from Kirk Shinmoto, and he does it much better than I do.

  6. Dylan: I was just looking through your blog. You probably know way more about this than I do, your life drawings are awesome, so the last note is for other people.

  7. Thanks for the kind words Rad, but from the amount I'm learning from this blog I KNOW you know a load more than me.

  8. excellent!! i think if you focus on one aspect of the study rather than worry about making sure everything gets in there, you'll find you're a bit more confident and you can put all your effort for that particular thing.

for example, if you were doing a thumbnail sketch of people standing in a train station, you wouldnt go in and gesture each person for the sake of it if your focus was composition. life study works sort of like that, each time you draw the model try to focus on either anatomy, or gesture, or shadows. for now it might help! but, i am 100% sure you know more than me, this is just something that helps me in particular.

a little side note, finding your blog has changed my art immensely. along the lines of when i first discovered what gesture even was. so, thank you so much for having this and sharing your thoughts

    cheers
